Democracy or Hypocrisy?

In a couple of days, India's finest sportsperson till date and its only undisputed World Champion will add another feather to his already well-celebrated hat and it won't occupy anything but a passing mention in the remotest corner of the print media.

Viswanathan Anand has done more to Indian chess than Sachin Tendulkar has done to Indian cricket. For a sport that had been the pastime of the intellectual elite in India, chess has gone from being a no-hoper to India's most realistic medal prospect at the Olympics whenever it does get included.

India were already World Champions before Sachin started playing competitive school cricket.

Vishy has been the epitome of anti-Indianism when it comes to sport. Consistency, big-match temperament and an unique humility that has never caught the eye of the millions who lined up Mumbai a couple of days back or the State Governments and the Private Sector whose actions bore greater resemblance to a bidding house than institutions responsible for social development.

One can't grudge the plaudits that have come the T-20 team's way. Sreesanth might have been compelled to go back to his dancing roots had he dropped that catch after an insipid bowling performance. With such stakes and pressure, the rewards have to be commensurate. But rewarding individuals in a team sport? Australia didn't reward Warne even after 700 test wickets. It is quite sad that this idol worship takes place just in India and Pakistan and it is reflected in the fact that neither team has never ever had a truly outstanding year in international cricket. How can there be camaraderie in the team when certain individuals are being openly favoured?

This game of one-upmanship between the State Governments in favour of individuals was anything but in the spirit of democracy. My esteem for Narendra Modi grew when he refused to reward the Pathan brothers, but our cursed democratic fabric allowed the Congress to attach ridiculous communal undertones that forced Mr. Modi to budge. It is a democracy where failed international cricketers become pundits and pour vitriol at the cricketers thus incensing the non-intellectual masses whose memory is shorter than the 'Gobbits'. Koneru Humpy, Sania Nehwal and the shooters take loans to fund their foreign travels and the babudom sees no travesty in this. Even the Marxists don't talk of an egalitarian society and the rights of the 'underprivileged' when it comes to cricketers.

The future of all this? Expect friction to grow between Yuvraj and Dhoni and see India plunge back to its mediocre depths (Read 1-6 against Australia) interspersed by individual brilliance. Sportspersons of the 'OBC ' (others but cricket) category are likely to go on more hunger strikes and we will be celebrating the democracy in all this since our society allows such individuals to have a platform to ask for other rights.

Meanwhile, far off in Madrid, Spain, a mild-mannered champion would be taking off his glasses and telling Aruna Anand, "What a hypocritic country!".

am sure vishy doesn't mind, and remember chess is a different game. he wouldn't have become the champion he is had publicity and government handouts been on his agenda.as far as his vileness modi is concerned-- a his personal propoganda website is costing the gujrat govt a fortune( much more than the handouts to cricketers)...it's just that with the elections approaching he really doesn't want to be seen spending tax payer's money on a pathan....

Excellent post.
Its a pity that our so called "national sports" is receiving such a cold welcome in our country.

It's a topic that invites much debate...my perspective, to be honest, keeps varying here...right from what u have said...to an acceptance of the fact that cricket in India is head and shoulders above the other sports when it comes to popularity and so is bound to attract more attention than the others...the rewards and accolodaes and hype are the end-results...so i would not like to call it hypocrisy...just that it's a non-utopian world...which i wud say is justified...at least this time.

Cricket is a sport which requires individual brilliance much more than other team games...say yuvi against aussies... or england... but as far as awarding individuals goes..BCCI set the precedent... the others just followed the steps... I dnt think that even the sponsors honoring individual brilliance is wrong... but i agree to ur point when it comes to the democracy and government dishing out loathes for their "own" cricketers... and forgetting totally their "not-so-own" hockey players...and the footballers...

The money cricket rakes in for these people...is nothing as compared to what they have been given... and the pressure they withstand to perform as they have... justifies their claims to the bounties they are getting... i have never seen people rally like they did wen india won... not when the kargil war was being fought... not when the reservation bill was on the parliament floor... not when indian POW's were mistreated by the pak govmnt... goes to show...where their sentiments and priorities are attached... and the businessmen sell what the people want... u know that best... is why cricket sells...
believe me...its only a matter of one or two tournament more...for indian hockey... somehow...chak de india has done them a very big favor... they already are heroes but winning..and in future... expect to see them being weighed against gold as well... just one or tournaments more...
Vishwanathan anand... the shooters... and OBC's...as u say... need more of media coverage than nething... (dammit wen rakhi sawant can get overnight fame just by rallying media people areound her...we are talking of real national heroes here...they are the best bet..)
and somebdy needs to direct these media people to the right players... somebody...who knows all of this... and feels for all if this... MAYBE THAT SOMEBODY WOULD BE YOU..(RECALLING ONE OF YOUR CHILDHOOD AMBITIONS OF BEING A SPORTS-JOURNALIST..OR A SPORTS MANAGER...)

I agree. Am a fan of Anand too. He certainly is winning.. Such disrespect!

And SRK was all over the place for T20 but not even a mild handshake for the hockey team.. Such irony!

All this while the govt showers notes on those guys.. Such a waste of my Dad's money!

P.S. Watching the R14 games on partidas.chessmexico.com

great Post...
but thats an old grievance...
all u gotta do is to watch Kumari Mayawati's birthday celebrations and you'd be able to justify all the rewards that our cricketers have been getting....

Also...these were the people whose effigies were burnt and houses demolished a couple of months ago...so it most definitely is payback time....

talking about media(@ kapil)...they're not supposed to serve 'us'...they serve the masses!!

Kapil said...

@ gopal...i dnt think u wud disagree to it...media is serving itself more than ne other thing right now... news channels show what helps them increase their TRP's... newspapers compromise the quality of news according to the viewership... and not according to the quality of the news...
media is suposed to serve the masses... give them the right and correct info..which may not be the most interesting at times.. but pretty enlightening... and necessary....
